Everything about ancient Greek history is always exciting. the Greeks along with the Romans and Egyptians are some of the oldest civilisations in the known world. Since Biblical Times their culture, science, people, art and the history are the one people studying until this day. Two things decided as the most popular from Greek are Athens and the Sparta! Athens, the capital of Greece is known as the symbol of freedom, democracy and art. The capital name is taken from goddessAthena. In this place, we'll see the beauty of architecture united with culture, art and science. There are two hills in the center of the town; Acropolis and Lycabettus. Athens is the place where the democracy and philosophy developed at the past.

Meanwhile, the second well-known town is Sparta. While Athens built democracy system, Sparta did the opposite by having two kings. One King handled and stayed at the empire, and the other one is away for battles. It is stated that one Spartan is worth with several other men. Because the Spartans spent too much time at the war, they had slaves called helots who grew the farm for caring the Spartan to prevent them from starving.

Spartans spent their life in the army in the early age. At the age of 7, they spent their life in the army school in a tough discipline like must have walked in cold weather. Besides, they were taught to steal food. If they were married, the Spartans had to live in army camps. For the Spartans wives, they would look after the farm. Spartans were really proud of their hair. When you heard about Spartans combing their hair before the battles began, it is just one of unique facts about them in pride.

Living in Sparta Family

In Ancient Greek History, being a Spartan might be a pride for people. However, they lived in difficulties. Since they were young, they should have physical exercise even a girl. A wife of Spartan would run the family and gave an order to the Helots to take care of the farm. A mother of Spartans was really proud of their sons even though they would die.

The 300 Spartans

Spartans are the most famous soldier in Ancient Greek History in Thermopylae war. The Spartans should have faced the Persian soldiers in around 170.000 of the amount. What makes this war becomes so interesting is the 3 days of war is almost won by the Spartan.

In short, the 300 of Spartans were truly right, but they were not alone. Spartans built an alliance with other kingdoms and it reached around 7,000. Then, in the 5th centuries, Herodotus claimed that they were over 2 millions of Persian soldiers. But, it is thought that the number were around 100,000-300,000 so, the Greek still had difficulties against the rival.

Persians intended to conquer the whole Greek, but the King of Sparta met the Xerxes, king of Persia in Thermopylae where the number of Persian armies was nothing. Leonidas had succeeded to beat the Persians in two days.

By then, a Greek, called Ephialtes betrayed the King by leaking the path to Persians which enabled them to outflank Leonidas. King Leonidas built a rear-guard consist of 300 Spartans, 400 Thebans, 700 Thespians and slaves (the rest of them). In the end, they created a failure, but this sacrifice succeeded to beat the rival for two days.
